Walder Boom Brake #103

Why choose Walder?

Trusted by sailors worldwide for over 40 years, Walder boom brakes are proven on cruising yachts of all sizes. The #103 is their entry-level model, ideal for mid-size boats looking for safe downwind sailing.

  • Designed for smaller cruising sailboats.

  • Typically suitable for boats in the 28–38 ft range (exact specs depend on sail area and displacement).

  • It’s a compact unit — lighter duty than the #203, #403,

  • A safety device for sailboats that controls the swing of the boom during a gybe (intentional or accidental).

  • Works by running a control line (often Dyneema or polyester) from port to starboard through the device, mounted on the boom.

  • The line’s friction inside the Walder unit resists the boom’s movement, slowing it down and preventing violent slams.

  • Prevents gear damage, broken goosenecks, and injury to crew.

  1. The boom brake is mounted to the underside of the boom (usually about halfway along).

  2. A control line is run from one side deck, up through the boom brake, and down to the opposite side deck.

  3. By tightening or easing this line, you adjust the friction inside the brake:

    • More friction = boom moves slowly.

    • Less friction = boom swings freer.

  4. During a gybe, instead of a sudden crash, the boom swings across under controlled resistance.
